th!NK is a collaboration between all the schools in the Rutland Northeast School District and the Compass Music and Arts Foundation. The concept is to create a large - very large - collaborative drawing by engaging the creative strength of the RNESU students, teachers, parents, and community members.

The walls of our main 2,300 sq. ft. gallery space will be covered with big sheets of blank paper and over the course of three weeks, starting March 20, more than 900 students will take field trips to come and draw on the walls using ink and a brush. The students will slowly transform the sheets of blank paper into a single complex and interconnected drawing.

The space will also be open at the times listed above for families and community members to participate by drawing as well.

The hope is that it will be an event that embodies the collaborative, positive, and creative nature of our community. They also hope the experience of working on this drawing will promote conversation and thought about what it means to be part of a big project, and a community, like the one we live in. Making thoughtful choices about what to draw, while considering both what has been drawn before you and what might be drawn after you leave, is a metaphor for living in a community with others.

On April 13, from 4:00-7:30pm, there will be a reception for everyone to visit and view the completed drawing. The exhibit will be on display through April.

This project is a big undertaking and has generous, enthusiastic, and amazing support so far from the Neshobe PTO, Lothrop PTO, Otter Valley Boosters, Compass Foundation, National Bank of Middlebury, Brandon Artists Guild, and the Vermont Arts Council, just to name a few.

Volunteers are needed to work with the students, help clean and prepare supplies, or help supervise the space during the "open draw" times. If you are interested in volunteering please email John at

The project was inspired by a group called the Sumi Ink Club. For a more in-depth look, watch their video.

This event is a part of Vermont Arts 2017, celebrating public funding for the arts.
